Each year, McGahan Lees supports the John Flanagan Memorial Feis in Oxford.

The feis is a charity feis held in honour of Marion’s father, John Flanagan, who died in 1999 and was the inspiration behind Marion’s teaching career. Proceeds from the feis are donated to a charity chosen by the school each year. The feis has just celebrated its 22nd year.

John Flanagan - Irish Dance

We are delighted to announce that on the 22nd and 23rd May 2021 we successfully hosted the John Flannagan Memorial Feis in accordance with the restrictions imposed by the UK Governments Roadmap out of Lockdown.

There were quite a few changes from previous years, including a new venue for this year only (due to regular venue in Oxford being closed to external hirers). Chelmer Valley was an ideal venue that allowed us to implement the new procedures required and keep all our dancers, families, teachers, adjudicators, musicians and organizers safe.

Not only has it been 14 months since the last Feis in our region but it is also the only Charity Feis that the region currently hosts. Hosting a Charity Feis this year is especially poignant given how hard this pandemic has hit their ability to raise much needed funds. Again, this year our recognised charity is Cancer Research, a dreaded disease that has hit so many of our families as hard as the Pandemic.

We are delighted to announce that we raised £2441 for CRUK!

We followed all the Government Guidelines to ensure we operated a COVID safe environment. The details of this are covered in the syllabus however the key measure we will took included:

  • Dancers dancing each round on their own.
  • Entries to each competition will have a capped number of entrants to ensure we can maintain 50% of venue capacity.
  • Each competitor restricted to one spectator.
  • Respectfully requesting dance schools limit their teachers’ attendance to one per venue where they have dancers competing.
  • Continual cleaning of key touch points, and stages throughout the day and in particular between age groups.
  • One-way systems throughout the venue.
  • Touch free awards ceremonies.
  • Restricting venue access by using pre-competition holding areas.
  • Contactless payments were possible.

It was our aim to try and create as normal as an environment as possible, allowing dancers to catch up with old friends, and dance competitively for the first time in a very long time, but above all we did everything in a considered manner and try to keep everyone feeling safe.
